Mandrels
The mandrel, fitted with a sleeve, is used to coldwork the hole. West Coast Industries mandrels are made from highest quality vacuum-melted tool steel which has been double tempered and precision ground. Their useful life is related to the type and yield strength of the material to be coldworked, the amount of interference between the mandrel and the hole, wear due to a coldworking of the mandrel itself, and a slight abrasiveness of the lubricant on the inside of the sleeve.
-
Available in a number of lengths, based upon the stackup to be pulled. Unlike split sleeve mandrels, the working length is the same regardless if a flush nosecap or a nosecap extension is used.
-
Special sizes are available
WCI-CMX-10-0-1-20 5/16" nominal, 300 Puller, 2" stackup WCI-CMX-12-0-2-30 3/8" nominal, 400 Puller, 3" stackup
Pilots
The pilot is used to support the split mandrel once the major diameter has passed through the hole to be coldworked. Pilots are ordered to match the length and size of the mandrel.
300 Puller
400 Puller
WCI-300P-80/143-20 Pilot used with 300 puller for mandrel sizes 8-0 thru 14-3. Two-inch length WCI-400P-20 Pilot used with 400 puller for all mandrel sizes. Two-inch length
Nosecaps
Nosecaps are used to transfer coldwork pull force from the workpiece to the puller gun. The nosecap is equipped with a lubricant system to transfer a thin-film lubricant to the surface of the mandrel. This protects the hole, while reducing pull force.
Flush Nose
Flush nosecaps are used where there is no restricted access.
WCI-300-NX-10-0 Nosecap for the 300 puller, to coldwork a 5/16" hole
WCI-300-NX-14-0 Nosecap for the 400 puller, to coldwork a 7/16" hole
Extension Nose
A nose extension is used in areas of limited access with both 300 series and 400 puller guns. A mandrel extension and pilot extension is included with the nosecap, so only the thickness of the material to be coldworked needs to be considered when determining mandrel length
WCI-300-ENX-8-0 Extension Nose for the 300 puller, to coldwork a 1/4" hole
WCI-400-ENX-16-0 Extension Nose for the 400 puller, to coldwork a 1/2" hole
Starting Drills
Starting drills create a hole ready for reaming to the pre-coldwork size.
- Manufactured from high speed steel or cobalt
- Used to create holes in new production work
- All drills under 1/2" have straight shank, larger sizes have a stepped-down shank to accept standard chucks.
WCI-SDX-10-2-N Start Drill for 11/32" nominal hole size WCI-SDX-18-3 Start Drill for 39/64" nominal hole size
Reamers
Start Hole Size
Start hole reamers bring the hole to its pre-coldwork size. The non-cutting pilot helps guide the reamer into the pre-drilled pilot hole.
WCI-SRX-18-1-N Start reamer for 37/64" hole size WCI-SRX-6-0 Start reamer for 3/16" nominal hole size
Final Size Reamers
The final size reamer cleans up the ridges left by the mandrel and leaves a smooth, round hole ready for countersinking or fastener installation. The non-cutting pilot is used both as a guide and to verify the hole has been coldworked.
WCI-FRX-8-0-2609 1/4" nominal, reaming to .2609" WCI-FRX-14-3-4950 31/64" nominal hole size, reamed to .4950"
Go-No Go Gages
Go-No-Go gages can be purchased from West Coast Industries for on-line inspection of start hole, reamed holes, codlworked holes, mandrels and pilots.
Combination Gage
The combination gage is used to check the reamed, pre-coldworked start hole, with a go-no go end, while the other end verifies the hole has been coldworked.
WCI-CBGX-12-0 Used to check a 3/8" nominal hole WCI-CBGX-16-1 Used to check a 33/64" nominal hole
Mandrel Wear Gages
Mandrel wear gages are available for every mandrel size. If the mandrel major diameter passes through the No Go gage, the mandrel is worn beyond its limit.
WCI-WGX-12-0 Checks a 12-0, 3/8" mandrel
Pilot Wear Gage
A Go No-Go gage that checks the pilot for unacceptable wear
WCI-300-PDW-60-63 Check pilot for a 300 series puller, used with 6-0 through 6-3 mandrels WCI-400-PDW Checks all 400 series mandrels
Inspection Pin
The inspection pin is used to check the mandrel major diameter. The gague diameter is precision ground to match the diameter of the pilot. Once inserted into the forward end of the split mandrel, it expands the mandrel to operational size. This allows the Go/No-Go gague to be used to check the diameter of the mandrel for wear.
WCI-IP-80/143 Checks 300 series mandrels in the range of 8-0 through 14-3 WCI-IP-4 Checks all 400 puller mandrels
Pilot Wrench
This two-piece wrench is used to facilitate pilot installation and removal on the puller gun
